People, Market, Religion, Hate, and Hope

Ranchi, India

In the heart of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand, lies the Doranda Bazaar—a vibrant tableau of unyielding struggle and resilience, set against a backdrop of aspirations for a kinder future. This collection captures the soul of a marketplace at a pivotal time, when tradition meets the inexorable march of modernity.

During my journey through India, I found myself drawn to the Bazaar, especially as it bustled in preparation for the Chhath Pooja—a festival where women honor the setting and rising sun. The images portray not only the vivid colors and intricate textures of the market but also the quiet stories of its inhabitants. Each photograph is a testament to the enduring spirit of the small shopkeepers and vendors who, despite the encroachment of sprawling supermarkets, strive to maintain their livelihoods.

Yet, the Bazaar's story is more complex. With the rise of big supermarkets, traditional market spaces are increasingly threatened. The humble fruit seller, the skilled pottery maker—these keepers of tradition find themselves pushed to the margins, their stalls overshadowed by the gleaming facades of modern commerce. This shift, captured through my lens, reveals a poignant struggle: the fight to preserve a way of life in the face of relentless economic pressures.

Amidst this economic turbulence, another layer of complexity unfolds. In a time when the far-right BJP government's policies foster an environment of fear and exclusion, particularly against Muslims, the Bazaar presents a scene of unexpected unity. During Chhath Pooja, it is not uncommon to see Muslim vendors and shopkeepers of various faiths offering worship items to Hindu devotees. This once unremarkable aspect has become a unique and surprising element, a quiet act of defiance against the forces of division. Through these photographs, I aim to highlight this remarkable facet of the Bazaar, where commerce and communal harmony coexist in defiance of the times.

These photographs invite you to walk the narrow lanes of Doranda Bazaar, to witness the juxtaposition of age-old customs and contemporary challenges. Here, amidst the garlands and worship items, one finds a community clinging to hope, yearning for a future that might finally smile upon them.
